# Import students and instructors

> Prepare a membership CSV, check the preview and import people into the right groups.

Use the import flow shown in your [Admin Dashboard](https://studystash.com/admin). Dashboards with **Groups** use the membership CSV (CSV means comma-separated values: a spreadsheet file with one row per record.) format below. If you see the older **Add Course** flow, use the instructions at the end of this guide.

## 1. Prepare a membership CSV

[Download the CSV template](data:text/csv;charset=utf-8;base64,ZW1haWwsZmlyc3RfbmFtZSxzdXJuYW1lLHJvbGUsZ3JvdXBfcGF0aAo=), then add one row per person and destination group.

```csv theme={null}
email,first_name,surname,role,group_path
alex@example.edu,Alex,Smith,student,Medicine / Anatomy
sam@example.edu,Sam,Jones,lecturer,Medicine / Anatomy
```

Replace the example people and group path with your institution’s details.

| Column | What to enter |
| - | - |
| `email` | The person’s institution email address. |
| `first_name` | First name. |
| `surname` | Surname. Keep the column even if a person has no surname. |
| `role` | `student` or `lecturer`. Use `lecturer` for instructors. |
| `group_path` | The exact existing destination path, such as `Medicine / Anatomy`. |

Repeat a person’s email on separate rows to add more than one membership. Use the same role for that person throughout the file. The membership import accepts up to **2,000 rows** at a time.

## 2. Upload and review

Open the CSV upload option on your groups page. The button uses your institution’s group label, such as **Add Group with CSV Upload**; on smaller screens it appears as **CSV**.

Select your file. Review the number of people, memberships and destinations in the preview. If a group path or role is rejected, correct the file and upload it again.

## 3. Confirm the import

Select **Import** when the preview is correct, or **Cancel** to leave it unapplied. Existing memberships are kept. New people remain pending until provisioning; an import preview alone does not mean they can sign in.

Check the resulting memberships in the dashboard. See [insight email setup](https://help.studystash.com/administrators/set-up-insight-emails.md) for instructor reporting.

> [accordion] My dashboard uses Add Course instead of Groups
>
> Open **Add Course → Get Started → Download CSV Templates**. Use the templates from that screen, as their fields differ from the membership format above.
>
> This older flow labels instructors as **lecturers**. Upload students and instructors separately. Complete the student template’s name, email and course fields; complete the lecturer template’s **Module Name** field as well. Follow the dashboard’s upload and confirmation steps.
