# Export a student list from Canvas

> Export the gradebook, then prepare only the fields needed for the StudyStash student import.

You need permission to export the Canvas gradebook. If the export option is unavailable, ask a Canvas administrator to complete these steps.

**1. Open the course**

Select the relevant course from the Canvas dashboard.

**2. Open Grades**

Select **Grades** in the course navigation.

**3. Open the export menu**

Select **Export** above the gradebook.

**4. Export the gradebook**

Choose **Export Entire Gradebook** to download the course list. Check any filters before using **Export Current Gradebook View** instead.

**5. Prepare the student list**

Wait for the export to complete and open the downloaded CSV. Prepare a separate file using the [student import template](https://help.studystash.com/administrators/student-csv-template). Keep only the required names and institution email addresses; remove grades and other unrelated columns.

## If email addresses are missing

Check that the exported identifier is an institution email address, rather than assuming it is one. Ask your Canvas administrator for the correct roster fields if needed. Do not upload the unedited gradebook to StudyStash.
